Critic's view: Stephen Holden writes in The New York Times, The movie isn't the first art film to show real as opposed to simulated sex, but it's the first to scrutinize at length one couple's bedroom etiquette in a search for their identities.

Critic's view: Roger Ebert writes As an idea, the film is fascinating, but as an experience it grows tedious; the concerts lack closeups, the sex lacks context, and Antarctica could use a few penguins.

Critic's view: Ann Hornaday writes in The Washington Post, 9 Songs succeeds as an experiment in one regard, ultimately proving that sex and drugs just aren't as cinematic as good old rock-and-roll.
