A masterpiece by Bernardo Bertolucci, with Marlon Brando in one of his greatest roles and a 19-year-old Maria Schneider. It's become infamous for its butter scene, but this wonderful art movie offers so much more.

Last Tango in Paris, USA, 1972. Written and directed by Bernardo Bertolucci.

Starring: Marlon Brando, Maria Schneider.

Plot: A middle-aged American man, in pain over his wife's suicide, numbs his agony in sexual encounters with a young Parisian woman he meets in an empty Paris apartment.

Critic's view: Jamie Russell, BBC: Last Tango gives Brando his last great role. His performance is both terrific and terrifying. Schneider's chubby faced pixie can't compete, but that's the point: this is a film about a misogynist, maybe even a misanthropist.

Critic's view: Roger Ebert: This movie was the banner for a revolution that never happened... The movie frightened off imitators, and instead of being the first of many X-rated films dealing honestly with sexuality, it became almost the last. Hollywood made a quick U-turn into movies about teenagers, technology, action heroes and special effects.

Critic's view: Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian: What a bizarre film it is, capable of delivering some shocks, certainly, but possessing not power exactly, but a fascinating, unevolved clumsiness. Brando confronts the audience like a bull behind the china shop counter, and his extraordinary, old-fashioned charisma is what keeps you watching.
